Using TriCaster and ProPresenter to Overlay Lyrics on Video

Grant Whitehead of Wallfly Streaming shows how ProPresenter on a Mac can be used in conjunction with TriCaster to overlay text on video output, in this case to supply lyrics on an auditorium display for live presentation during services at a house of worship. ProPresenter sends its “Stage Display” direct to the Mac’s Mini Display Port (MiniDP), which connects to the TriCaster Mini’s HDMI in, via an inexpensive and easily available MiniDP-to-HDMI cable. One of the TriCaster’s M/E buses is set up to lumakey out the black background on the ProPresenter output, and overlay the text on Program Output, over any live source or pre-recorded video the operator chooses.

No other software or conversion equipment is needed for this workflow – so very simple to set up, but so very able to create a compelling multimedia experience for an audience. TriCaster was designed with multimedia presentation in mind, and this workflow just one of many built-in alternatives that are available for bringing the display or content from other computers into a TriCaster. This same workflow can be duplicated with an IP workflow using NewTek’s iVGA application, or one of the new NDI™ applications (many are free), to make the display of a networked computer available as a network input for the TriCaster.

In most installations the systems would be networked anyway, so one might as well make use of that, eliminate the extra cable needed for a direct video connection and free up a TriCaster input for another camera.  We’ve provided a summary list of one form of this alternative IP workflow, below the summary listing of the workflow demonstrated in the video.

Workflow shown in this video:

  • ProPresenter on Mac, set to send Stage Display to Mini Display Port
  • MiniDP-to-HDMI cable connecting Mac to TriCaster Mini HD-4i
  • TriCaster Mini M/E bus set up to key out background from the ProPresenter HDMI input and overlay lyrics on video from TriCaster’s Media Player
  • Keyed lyrics over video sent to Program Output
  • Program Output to large format auditorium display

Alternative IP Workflow

  • Mac and TriCaster Mini HD-4 or HD-4i networked on Gigabit Ethernet LAN
  • ProPresenter and iVGA Pro on Mac, set up to send Mac display to the network.
  • TriCaster Mini M/E bus set up to key out background from the ProPresenter network input and overlay lyrics on video from TriCaster’s Media Player
  • Keyed lyrics over video sent to Program Output
  • Program Output to large format auditorium display
